only a few months ago we celebrated the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Everyone we gave pats on the back and smiled at the breakthrough which led the event. However, it appears that few remember (or even know) that there is another wall, a wall also divides a village, a wall that marks the difference between freedom and occupation.
is a 2,720 km wall that has existed since 1984, protected by anti-personnel mines and an army, the Moroccan army. This perfectly fulfills its role wall separates the Sahara to those found in the liberated territory of those who are abducted from their home. Thanks to reporting The wall of shame held in the portal saharalibre.es we know of its existence. I'll just quote these powerful words to describe it:
The wall of shame:
the world what NOT SEE,
what Morocco NOT WANT TO SEE,
what the government of Spain not see,
what United Nations failed to see,
what free citizens MUST SEE.
This wall is just a sample of a nightmare, but for many it is a reality for other half is quite real, is the story of the Saharawi people.
few months ago I had the opportunity to make an interview with a Saharawi that showed for the freedom of his people, and explained their struggle. Now, I remind the story that continues with no solution, there is a town that only calls for a referendum to show that wants to be free. That just begs to be free. Only.
José Saramago said in his letter to Haidar quite correctly that this is not humanitarianism "United Nations resolutions, international law and common sense are on one side, and in Morocco and Spain is known.. "
It is known, but unfortunately nothing is done.
is shocking and deeply offensive to international law to know that there are numerous United Nations resolutions in which the Saharawi people granted the right to self-determination and independence and that, nevertheless, not yet be recognized. Already in 1960 with UN resolution 1514 included the Saharawi people between colonized peoples and free. In 1975 the International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled that Western Sahara's sovereignty has no ties with Morocco. In 1985 the Decolonization Committee reintroduced the determination of the Saharawi people. I could go on giving dates each more daunting. This is a story of awards, resolutions, decisions and recommendations that have gone unnoticed (with more pain than glory, really) down the road toward freedom of the Saharawi people.
Today as usual, same or worse. The recent history of Aminatou Haidar, an activist for free to Sahara were expelled on 14 November Laayoune imposed for denying the Moroccan nationality, reminds us of this sad reality. Aminatou Haidar is in a dire situation, living in the Canary airport, decided to return to his people to continue struggle. JOINING Many are limited to her to take the photo and say they are outraged, as in the present case the BNG . Although more is still reportable action from the English Government, which has been accused of Aminatou Haidar treating unworthily after withdrawing his passport and the only solution to offer English nationality. Many others are those who have teamed up to bring Haidar support from lawyers and politicians to actors like Willy Toledo, but little is actually done.
Knowing all this when we stop to fill his mouth saying that the Saharawi people have freedom and self-determination is recognized and when you actually recognize?. In practice, when will it be free?, Why things are so, how many years it will take to be truly free the people who have already suffered enough? How much longer will the English government as washing your hands?
Needless to say, the Sahara is a rich land to which Morocco is interested in owning, but who else cares that this situation continues? Maybe that is the key.
Saramago As I do not consider myself anything separatist, as I believe, like him, that the planet belongs to everyone, and, most importantly, that people are worth more than a piece of land. But this, in principle so basic and obvious, it seems that many people forget, to the detriment of other interests unfortunate
This story, like many others (known and silenced), it is our shame.
